Although the exact reason and timing behind its Turkish name remain uncertain, Piri Reis described the island in his work as having a tall, pointed gray hill (now known as G\u00f6ztepe) from which the sea could be monitored up to 40 miles away. Similarly, ships approaching from the sea could spot this distinctive gray hill, leading Turkish sailors to refer to it as \u201cBoz Ada\u201d or \u201cBozcaada.\u201d<\/p>\n
